What tests should be done at the six month interval? Certainly, I have had no problem whatsoever from the plaquenil..even knowing plaquenil induced eye problems are rare...

I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. My first two exams did include these tests. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test this time so the appointment would be shorter. May 02, 2007 I also had to get a baseline exam prior to taking the Plaquenil and my rheumy was very serious when he said not to take them until I had the exam. They have to examine you to see if you have anything of concern that they can determine that is NOT caused by Plaquenil which is why the baseline exam is important. A rare side effect of plaquenil involves visual changes or loss of vision, known as hydroxychloroquin retinopathy. If caught early may improved after medication is stop, though it is not always reversible. It is recommended regular eye examn while of plaquenil to catch early changes. Once abnormality are discovered, toxicity has occurred.

I am also on low dose prednisone, I have taken prrednisone daily for 18 months at levels ranging from 2.5 mg to 5 mg...periodic boosts to 60 mg with a fast taper back down to 5 mg. I would like to make sure they continue to follow the proper guidelines.

If you take this medication, it is important to have annual eye exams by your ophthalmologist, so he/she can monitor changes within your eye. At San Antonio Eye Specialists, we monitor Plaquenil patients by testing visual acuity, color vision, central visual field testing, distortion test and a thorough retina exam. Plaquenil is a pretty widely used drug so I figure she should have an opinion on it. I would feel more comfortable having the baseline exam done first BUT I am pretty eager to get started on it ASAP as my eye is starting to bug me due to the morphea that is slowly spreading. If you're taking this medicine for a long period of time, your doctor will probably recommend annual eye exams. Pregnancy and Plaquenil. It's not known whether Plaquenil will harm an unborn baby.
