    Is plaquenil a sulfonamide

I thought it was a sulfa drug or at least in the same class. I would have thought that the "sulfate" in the name would be a give away?

I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction. Other medications that may cause a reaction. Other types of sulfa medications may trigger a reaction in some people who have a sulfa allergy Sulfasalazine Azulfidine, used to treat Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Dapsone, used to treat leprosy, dermatitis and certain types of pneumonia. The Plaquenil and sulfasalazine allergies manifested exactly the same way, though the sulfa reaction was a bit more severe. I'm also allergic to the sulfonomide, erythromycin, so I think it's fair to say that anything related to sulfa drugs is off the menu.

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) belongs to a group of medicines called quinolines. The active components are bound to a sulphur compound as it slows down release times compared to hydrogen chloride which are usually found in faster release medications. what you are allergic to is sulfonamides like bactrim, right? Sulfate used after a drug name is just the last name of the chemical, its the sulfate salt.
